Mauritius in March

Beyond its picture-perfect tropical scenery, Mauritius has retained its soul and charm. If you're considering visiting in March, we've put together all the information you'll need before booking your next trip.

On the spot

In March, the Hindu community of Mauritius celebrates Ugadi (its new year). A week before, the Telegus (Hindus from southern India) clean and tidy their homes. They get rid of old things, buy new clothes and make new resolutions.

They decorate their entrances beautifully with rangolis (designs based on coloured powders) and their doors with garlands of mango leaves. At this time of year, you'll probably have the chance to try Pulihora, a sweet, bitter, salty and sour dish made with tamarind, turmeric, red chillies and curry. It's delicious!

March 2024 is marked by a world-famous Muslim religious festival: Eid el Fitr. It marks the end of Ramadan and the breaking of the fast. Eid is marked by a family meal, prayers and sharing this celebration.

In Mauritius, some festivals bring together Mauritians from all backgrounds and religions. On 12 March, for example, Mauritians proudly celebrate the anniversary of the island's independence. Concerts are organised all over the island, in public places, bars and hotels. It's a time for joy and celebration. There is also a military ceremony on the Champs de Mars in Port Louis.

Another not-to-be-missed event is Holi, the festival of colours and harvests, which takes place around the second half of March. It is a Hindu festival, but one that many Mauritians celebrate regardless of their origin.
