Every year on 8 September, Mauritian Catholics leave their homes and set off on a long walk to the chapel of Father Jacques Désiré Laval at Sainte Croix (in Port Louis).
Prayers are then said in the chapel. This 19th-century French missionary was believed to have miraculous healing powers. The death of Father Laval is commemorated every 9 September.

It's a festive, adrenaline-fuelled experience – for participants and spectators alike – that's not to be missed.br> Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or just looking for a fun challenge, there are three race categories: the 100km main race, the 65km touring ride or the 20km course for children and para-athletes.
In September, and sometimes in August, the island's Marathi community celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi. This 10-day festival marks the birth of the god Ganesha, protector of the home and symbol of good luck. The festivities begin with the installation of a statue of Ganesha in every home. The 10 days are marked by fasting, prayers and rituals.
On the eve of the 10th day, believers prepare cakes such as ‘Kanawla’, a small fried dumpling filled with coconut. These are eaten and then distributed to neighbours. On the 10th day, the final ritual consists of immersing the statue of Ganesha in a stream or the ocean. This symbolises Ganesha's departure from his home, taking with him the misfortunes of humankind.
