On the spot
In May, the island hosts several festive culinary events, fun and gourmet activities that are 100% family-friendly.
The Chinese Chamber of Commerce organises the Chinatown Food Festival in Port Louis. Every year, this two-day festival celebrates Chinese culture and cuisine. There are street food stalls (including traditional dishes reinterpreted as street food), as well as live entertainment. The streets of Chinatown are decorated and lively, and the music is in full swing. You're bound to have a great time!
Every year in May, the Domaine Labourdonnais hosts the Gourmet Experience. This emblematic venue opens its doors to all gourmands, young and old alike, for two days.
You'll find more than a dozen stalls serving homemade food (burgers, pastries and traditional Mauritian dishes, you name it). With live concerts and cocktail bars, it's the ideal event for eating, drinking and having fun. One thing's for sure: your palate will remember it!
Going to Mauritius in May means:
-
Enjoying the mild, sunny winter season
-
An air temperature close to 25°C, more pleasant than in midsummer

Fruit and vegetables:

Pâtisson (a type of small squash that can only be eaten cooked, in a gratin, sauté or ratatouille)
Butternut squash
Garlic
Chinese guavas
Avocados
Coconut, banana, papaya and Victoria pineapple (available all year round)
You'll have the pleasure of tasting them in restaurants, hotels and markets!

Things to do
May is the ideal month in Mauritius for hiking and nature excursions. The weather is pleasant, and temperatures are fairly mild. Each region of the island has its emblematic hikes: for example, Morne Brabant in the south and Le Pouce in the centre, Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire in the west (the highest mountain on the island), and Lion Mountain in the east. Your efforts will be quickly rewarded once you reach their summits, with magnificent views over the lagoons and the stunning landscape.
And after the effort comes the comfort! There's nothing like a moment of relaxation at the spa to unwind after a strenuous day spent in the mountains.
