On the spot
In August, Catholics around the world celebrate the Assumption, a Christian festival in honour of the Virgin Mary. And it's celebrated in Mauritius, too! In fact, 15 August is even a public holiday here. Masses and processions are held all over the island.
The most important ceremony is that of Marie-Reine-de-la-Paix, a shrine dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. Here, a majestic statue of the Virgin Mary keeps watch over Port Louis. This monument has already welcomed two pontiffs, Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis. A place steeped in history and rich in gatherings!
Fun fact: on 15 August, Catholic families enjoy blue and white ‘Mary cakes’.
