The Marine Discovery Centre
The centre helps the Anse La Raie lagoon restoration project and raises awareness among hotel guests, as well as local communities, providing knowledge and best practices.
What? Another commitment? Are you a hotel group or an NGO?
You’re getting to know us well! If you’re not sure what we’re talking about, you can learn about our commitments
here.
As a mission-driven company that’s certified B Corp, we advocate for responsible tourism.
Through concrete actions, we strive to preserve the island's environment, respect its wildlife, and
support those who live here… including animals.
It’s a matter of ecology and ethics.
While relaxing on the beach, we don’t always realise what’s happening below the surface of the water. There’s a whole ecosystem: corals we need to protect, turtles we need to leave in peace, and fish and marine species we can observe without disturbing them.
To encourage awareness, we have introduced several ways to learn more!
With us, there are no forced animal attractions. We don’t tempt animals with food or set up shows that compromise their wellbeing. We prefer responsible exploration:
• Enjoy a kayaking trip to discover the mangrove, where nature is reclaiming its rights
• Follow the marked snorkelling trails to discover underwater life
• Book sea outings with our local partners to observe whales without disturbing their migration
Watching turtles and dolphins swim? Yes.
Swimming with them? No, thank you.
Within all of our hotels, we implement initiatives and practices that may be discreet, but contribute to animal protection and environmental preservation – as one goes hand in hand with the other:
• We’ve eliminated all single-use plastic from the guest experience, avoiding 3.6 million units of unnecessary waste per year (and the risk that it may end up in the lagoon)!
• All of our in-room hygiene products are made without animal-derived ingredients and are not tested on animals.
• In our spas, we offer 100% natural and vegan treatments. Our spa products are made locally from ingredients grown on the island.
No big lectures here. Just small everyday choices that make all the difference.
We can’t advocate for local roots and ignore those who share the landscape with us. Like in many other countries, stray dogs (and cats) are numerous, resulting from a lack of awareness and education on sterilisation, as well as frequent abandonment. However, we do a lot to raise awareness within the local community about the importance of this approach.
Since 2021, an internal committee from Attitude has been collaborating with local associations (Mauritius Society for Animal Welfare, Four Paws, All Lives Matter, PAWS) to vaccinate, sterilise, and care for stray animals around our hotels. In each hotel, an ‘Animal Welfare Ambassador’ is appointed from the hotel team. Their tasks include:
• Liaising with veterinary clinics, shelters and adoption centres
• Ensuring medical follow-up, such as vaccinations and sterilisation
• Managing the Animal Lounges
• Raising awareness among teams and travellers about our approach.
We have a dog lounge in each of our hotels, dedicated to stray dogs. They are fed there, litters of puppies are relocated when necessary, and new dogs are welcomed for vaccinations and sterilisations.
We take care of them because it’s what we do best.
