Where to go in Mauritius:
The West
The West
In Mauritius, each region has its own unique atmosphere. And yes, on such a small island, you
can still find an impressive diversity of landscapes and atmospheres!
The West's atmosphere is cool and relaxed. It's a region where people like to take their time,
like enjoying a beautiful sunset on the beach with friends. The West is the second most popular tourist region after the North. It's packed with activities (hiking, diving, nature parks, bowling) and has no shortage of bars and restaurants.
In the West, people like to relax but also have fun and move around!

West of Mauritius:
Weather and climateThe climate on the west coast is very pleasant. The region is protected from the rains and getsplenty of sunshine, even during the wet season. Temperatures are high in this part of the island, particularly near the capital, Port-Louis. The water in the lagoon is also warmer on the west coast (between 23°C and 28°C), so you can swim and cool off here for most of the year!
Of course, the weather varies according to the season. So, check the temperatures and climate according to the month of the year to find out the best time to go to Mauritius.
The best beaches in the West
Fancy a swim on the west coast? Here are the best beaches in the region:
-
Flic en Flac
Ideal for snorkelling. There are beach stalls for a quick bite and many restaurants along the beach.
-
Tamarin Bay
This bay is known for its sunsets and is a popular local hangout. It's also a great spot for beginner surfers with lessons available.
-
Albion
A public beach loved by locals and tourists. Head to the lighthouse for a stunning sunset view of the ocean.
You should know that Mauritians love to meet on the beach every Sunday to enjoy their Sunday break with family and friends. They set up camp for the day, bring their food and sometimes even grill right on the beach. All in a festive atmosphere with live music. As a result, public beaches are often packed on Sundays.
If you want to experience a Mauritian Sunday, head to one of these beaches. If you prefer to
avoid the crowds, choose another day or a private beach.

The western isles
There's nothing like a half-day boat trip to get some fresh air and discover new lands! By catamaran or speedboat, you'll discover Ile aux Bénitiers. You'll leave from Rivière Noire and stop for a swim around Crystal Rock, an emblematic rock just opposite Ile aux Bénitiers. With turquoise water, of course...
Finally, set foot on the island for a swim and lunch. And if you're looking for souvenirs to take home, you'll find plenty on offer.
-
Diving
On the west coast, you can dive from Tamarin Bay or Flic en Flac, spots with a rich underwater fauna of reef fish, turtles and rays. You might even be lucky enough to spot dolphins.
Introductory sessions are available between Flic-en-Flac and Ile aux Bénitiers.
Activities in the heart of nature
-
Black River Gorges National Park
There's nothing quite as rejuvenating as an activity in the great outdoors. Head to the Black River Gorges National Park for a short, three-hour, easy and enjoyable hike. You'll be able to take your time admiring the vegetation and species found there, sheltered from the sun!
-
Chamarel waterfall
Chamarel waterfall is a must-see. It is the highest waterfall on the island. To get there and enjoy the panoramic view, allow 1 to 2 hours for the expedition. We advise that you be accompanied by a local guide.

Places to visit in the West
What's there to visit in the West? The Seven Colored Earth Geopark, of course! This is one of Mauritius's star attractions. In this natural park, you'll come across dunes with a magnificent gradation of colours. These seven colours are the result of volcanic explosions and the oxidation of basalt. It is a rare geological phenomenon to see for yourself.
Not far away, you'll find the Rhumerie de Chamarel, which offers tours of the distillery and (rather generous) rum tasting. The Rhumerie even has a very good restaurant if you fancy a bite to eat before or after your visit.
