Where to go in Mauritius:
The North Coast
The North Coast
Are you a fan of parties, aperitifs, brunches and lively bars?
You'll love the north of Mauritius.
The northern region is more lively than other regions. There are plenty of hotels, lounge bars
and nightclubs, making the North the most developed and most touristic region of the island.
In the North, it's all about getting a tan and having fun!

North of Mauritius:
Weather and climateThe climate on the north coast is more than pleasant. The region is protected from the winds and is less exposed to humidity than the rest of the island. There is plenty of sunshine and the climate is relatively dry. If you like sunbathing, swimming and/or diving, the North is the place for you.
Of course, the weather varies from season to season. Be sure to check the temperatures and climate according to the month of the year to find out when it's best to go to Mauritius.
The best beaches in the North
You won't be disappointed if you plan to swim along the north coast. This region is full of heavenly beaches. Here are just a few of them:
-
The Nothern Islands
If you book a day on a boat, you'll enjoy a tasty barbecue lunch, some snorkelling and a swimming break on one of the islands.
You'll be speechless when you see the crystal-clear water... and the postcard-perfect sandbank of Îlot Gabriel!
The water surrounding Coin de Mire island is a lovely snorkelling spot and great for a swim. However, it is a nature reserve, so remember you can't moor there or set foot on the island.
-
Kitesurfing, diving and snorkelling
- For kitesurfers, head to Anse la Raie!
- If you want to dive, you can do so almost year-round between Pointe aux Canonniers and Grand Gaube. The North is really the best place on the island for diving.
- Finally, if you prefer to admire the beauty of the underwater fauna, the best snorkelling spots are in Grand Baie, Île Plate, Îlot Gabriel and Trou aux Biches.
Like every region, the North of the island has its share of must-see sights and places to visit:
-
The Church of Cap Malheureux
is known for its famous red roof and is located on the water's edge. It's small but well worth a visit! You'll enjoy a breathtaking view of Coin de Mire and Ile Plate.
-
The Hindu Temple of Grand Gaube
is one of the smallest Hindu temples on the island, yet it's well worth the trip as it faces the ocean.
-
Goodlands Market
Colour and more colour, that's what you'll find at Goodlands Market. You'll find mainly vegetables and exotic fruits (Victoria pineapple, dessert banana, plantain banana, bird's eye chilli, Chinese guava, margosa, giraumon, calabash, chou chou, manioc, arouille and bringelle). If you haven’t heard of some of these, there’s all the more reason to try them!
-
Pamplemousses Botanical Garden
Created in 1735, this was the world's first tropical botanical garden. Once used to supply ships on the Indian Ocean route, it is now a peaceful haven where you can stroll and discover new species of trees and plants. Don’t miss the beauty of the water lily pond.
-
Grand Baie Bazaar
A market selling an impressive variety of souvenirs, bags, jewellery, fabrics and bamboo and coconut handicrafts. Not forgetting the street food stalls, which are never far away.
Restaurants and bars
There is no shortage of bars, restaurants, brunches, beach clubs or party and dance venues in
the North.
